How to Grow Globe Artichokes

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Terry Blackburn There are two types of artichoke, Globe and Jerusalem. The globe is a perennial with a thistle-like head complete with scales surrounding a fleshy frond or heart, which is the part with the most flavour. The Jerusalem artichoke is grown for its tubers, which are produced in the soil like potatoes. This too is a perennial, though is more conveniently grown by digging up the tubers each season and replanting the best specimens the following year, as in the case of potatoes. Soil Preparation The soil must be well drained to grow artichokes; it should be moist in the summer but dry in the winter. They require a sunny position for the unopened flower heads have more flavour when they are grown in full sun. A sheltered position is also required as the flower stems grow tall and are easily blown over. In the autumn dig the ground over to a spades depth, incorporating manure and some well-rotted compost at the rate of a bucketful to the sq. yd. then leave the ground rough to over winter. Fork the ground level in spring, adding fish manure at a rate of 3 oz. (76mm) to the sq. yd. This dressing should be repeated each year in March or early April. Planting The plants should be purchased from a reliable nurseryman; you can later increase your stock plants by severing the side growths or suckers, which will later develop at the base of each plant. These should be cut from the parent plant when they are about 9 in. (228mm) long, taking care that there is a part of the old plants root at base. Plant the new shoots in April in rows 3 ft (90cm) apart, allowing 3 ft. (90cm) between the plants. If you garden in the North then you should take your suckers during November and pot them up individually into 6 in. (152mm) pots, protect them from frost until the following May, when they can be re-planted into the bed. General Care Keep down the weeds, gently hoeing between the plants reducing the surrounding soil to a fine dust to about in. (12mm) layer of loose soil over the surface of the ground. If the artichokes are not growing sturdily by June, top dress with dried blood to promote better growth. When autumn arrives the plants should be given some protection against the on coming winter frosts. Straw is excellent for this purpose and it should be laid over each plant and a net drawn over the top and secured will keep the straw in place. If the straw becomes too wet, it should be replaced at intervals throughout the winter. Artichoke plants can last for as long as 12 years or more though it is good practise to replace the plants after 5 or 6 years to continue vitality and vigour in your stock. Harvesting The flower heads are not produced the first year, in the early summer of the second year, the large thistle-like heads which develop should be cut just before they open. Cut the main head, known as the king head, first. Secondary growths will then develop, each of which will produce a tender flower head. These are cut when they are the size of a large hens egg. For better flavour, cut no more than 1 hour before you intend to cook them. Terry Blackburn. Internet Marketing Consultant, living in South Shields in the North-East of England. Natural Remedies for Mild Depression

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Michael Russell Many people suffer from mild or moderate depression in silence. These people often hide their symptoms from friends and family, hoping that it will just go away on its own. It rarely does however and they would benefit from any one, or a combination, of natural remedies for depression. One of the most popular natural depression remedies is St. John’s Wort. This herbal supplement has been shown in many clinical studies to have positive effects similar to prescription antidepressant medication, with fewer side effects. Many of the popular prescriptions have sexual, appetite, or sleep problems as side effects. While St. John’s Wort does not, its main side effect is an increased sensitivity to light, which usually affects fair-skinned people the worst. Other side effects common to both St. John’s Wort and prescription medications are dry mouth, headache, fatigue and dizziness. Other herbal remedies that are gaining popularity as cures for mild depression are ginkgo biloba, kava kava and black cohosh. Each of these is used for a specific type of depression. Ginkgo biloba is primarily used by people suffering from mild depression and memory loss or other dulled mental functions because it helps improve overall mental health. Kava kava is used mainly for anxiousness associated with depression because it calms a person and helps them fall asleep and have more restful sleep. Black cohosh is relatively new as an antidepressant, but it shows promise because it calms the nerves, encouraging sleep and it increases daytime energy. Another natural remedy for mild depression is targeted amino acid therapy, or TAAT. This works because certain depressions include imbalances in brain chemicals, which are made from amino acids. This imbalance is found by a simple non-invasive (meaning there is no cutting involved) test. Once the test is performed and the type of imbalance determined, treatment can begin. This involves taking supplements of the amino acid needed to make the brain chemical, which is deficient. There are four types of amino acids used to make brain chemicals. They are 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan), L-Carnitine, L-Tryptophan and SAM-e. L-Tryptophan and 5-HTP are used to make serotonin. L-Carnitine has been shown to relieve depression, although there is no clear reason why as this amino acid is primarily used to turn stored fat into energy. SAM-e is involved in methylation, the process by which the body makes brain chemicals, so this amino acid is also involved in the production of serotonin. Many people suffering from mild depression also have a vitamin or mineral deficiency. In these cases, the deficiency may be causing the depression. A very simple way to see if that is the case is to change the diet. Folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids and niacin are the most common deficiencies. Folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and magnesium are used to make brain chemicals. Omega-3 fatty acids compose part of the cell membrane and are used in sending signals to other cells. Niacin is used for general function of the nerve cell. One more natural cure is lifestyle modification. This would include changing the diet, if there is a vitamin or mineral deficiency, but is not limited to just that. One way to change lifestyle is to use more natural lighting. Some people suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which is a form of depression linked to a vitamin D deficiency, which can be obtained from sunlight. People in areas with extended winters or dark periods are especially vulnerable to this depression. Many doctors suggest getting at least 15 minutes of sunlight every day, whether that is gotten outside or by sitting near a sunny window indoors. Physical exercise and sufficient sleep can also be remedies for depression because exercise gets the blood flowing, which helps theoverall mood and sufficient sleep is needed to deal with the everyday stresses of life. While sufficient sleep may help with stress, it’s not the only way to deal with stress and reduce depression. All stress reduction techniques, but especially meditation, yoga, biofeedback and massage, have been shown to help reduce depression and raise brain chemicals. Dating While Seeking GOD- A Road Less Traveled

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Greg Ryan Why is it when it comes to dating that we go fromone relationship right into another, searching forsomething from someone that only God is capable ofgiving us? Why do we think that leaping intoanother courtship will change our thinking andcurrent situation in our lives? We seem to have this delusion that we will live a happily everafter if we just find someone that will tellus what we want to hear and treat us the way wewant to be treated. Then when God does bring ussomeone that tells the truth we find ourselvesuncomfortable and go to someone who makes us feelbetter even though their not being honest with us. While we should be with someone that treats usnice and with respect, we should not compromiseour spiritual values with them. If we do, we willcontinue to go down a very lonely road filled withdisappointments and frustrations, time and timeagain only to point our finger at others, ourselves and God. The truth of the matter is until we acknowledgethat it’s our own relationship with Christ or lackof and not others that is contributing to thesedead end relationships we will never experiencethe true love that only Jesus Christ wants us tohave and can provide for us. However, this is theroad most choose not to travel. Why? Because it’sgot to many hills in it. We hit big pot holes andit may take a few unexpected curves along theway. It’s easier to blame others and to have theattitude that the world owes us someone. But inthe long run if we take God’s road it will get uswhere we need to go, in much faster time and amore forfilling journey. First, Gods road leadsus to having a loving relationship with JesusChrist, and second we experience a cup filledrelationship with the love of our life. The biblesays, “Seek ye first the kingdom and all otherthings will be added unto you” When Jesus saysthat, he means all things. We just may have totravel down a road less traveled in order to getthem. It sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? Though thisroad is challenging to say the least. Why? becausewe struggle with our fleshly desires to fill ourinternal needs instead of our spiritual needsfilled by God. And our flesh will always be athorne to us. So going from one relationshipright into another won’t solve the difficulties weseem to have in every relationship we experience. If we really want a true test about our lives lookat the majority of our friends we hang with. Howare their relationships with others? If they arehaving the same difficulties we are experiencing, maybe that should tell you something about yourown life and where you are getting yourvalidations from. If we want to make a true changein ourselves the majority of our friends andresources must be those that are living Godlylives, having relationships with others like wedesire to have, and telling us the truth in love, when maybe we don’t want to hear it. Looking inthe mirror at ourselves is not easy, but it’snecessary. It really boils down to our mindset toward lifeand having a lot of faith in Jesus Christ. Yes, wemay temporarily feel better about ourselves whensomeone new in our life satisfies our egos, andpride, but the emptiness will still be there. Godand life has a funny, yet sometimes painful way ofmaking us look in a mirror at our patterns ofrelationships. If your tired, frustrated and evenlonely about going from one dead end relationshipto look at our own relationship with Jesus Christ.Because, if you really think about, he’s our bestbet anyway. And he’ll be the one at the end of theroad less traveled filling our cups, not anotherperson. Greg Ryan is a best selling author of the Changing from the INSIDE OUT series. Creating the Perfect Profile for Online Dating

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Roman Zazulak If you have already joined or thinking of joining an online dating service, one of the things that you should consider is creating the perfect profile. Online dating profiles are an extremely important resource when communicating who you are to potential singles interested in meeting you. Practically every online dating service allows their members to create unique and individualized personal profiles on who they are, what makes them interesting and what type of person they would like to meet. Lets face it competition can be fierce, if you want to stand out from the crowd, one way to do it is with creating the perfect profile, here are some tips. Be Honest Honesty is extremely important when creating your online profile, while it is easy to exaggerate your positives and minimize your weaknesses in your profile, lying can be a deal breaker. Dont Be So Negative Everyone has pet peeves and bad days, however no one wants to meet or date a person that is constantly complaining or severely depressed. Show the positive side of your personality; convey that you are fun or interesting to be with and not a complete bore. No one wants to date a person that is miserable. State Your Preferences It is important to create a personal profile that gives readers clues on what type of person you are looking for. You might be a person that enjoys social surroundings, you might like intellectual activities or you might enjoy active or extreme sports. Your goal is to find someone compatible, so make sure you communicate what type of person you are looking for. Choose a Good Photo One of the most important parts of your personal profile is your photo. First off, its ok that you dont look like a movie star, but make sure you find a photo that portrays you in a positive light. If you dont have a good photo, ask a friend to take a picture of you. Try to stay away from taking your own picture or using web cams. Choose a good photo that is easy to view. Make sure it is not grainy or dark. Make sure people can see your face. Dont cover it up with a cap or sunglasses. Many online dating services offer you the ability to add 3 or 4 photos. This is a great resource, add a couple of photos while you do activities such as ski or at your favorite outdoor spot. This will give the viewer more information about you. A great tip is to change your photos frequently. While many people might see your first photo, you might get some added interest if two or three weeks later you change your primary photo. Keep Your Personal Profile a Decent Length Your personal profile can vary in length; however try not to make it too long or too short. For instance, dont write two sentences for your profile. Most people will immediately realize that you either have nothing to say or dont care. On the other hand, no one wants to read your life story, if they are interested in you and want to learn more, they will contact you. In his quest for finding the perfect wife, Roman tried every method imaginable until he finally got married to Gigi in 2004. Spring Cleaning Tips to Make the Job A Little Easier

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Adriana Copaceanu Spring-cleaning can seem like such a chore. You spend all day, or even a few days getting the entire house sparkly clean. As a busy mom, you will appreciate some of these cleaning tips that will make the job a little easier and faster. Youll have more time to enjoy the nice spring weather outside. Start out by taking a quick look through your cleaning supplies a few days before the big spring clean. Make sure you have plenty of paper towels and cleaning rags. If your mop or broom is really worn out, this is a great time to invest in a new one. Check all bottles and containers of cleaning supplies that you like to use and see if you have plenty of them. Theres nothing worse than having to clean yourself up during your big spring cleaning to run to the store for a new bottle of Windex. Get everyone in the family to spend some time with you the day before the big spring cleaning to pick up around the house. You dont want to spend time picking up toys or washing dishes the next day. Get up early and put on some comfortable clothes that you dont mind getting dirty. Dress all the way down to your shoes and put your hair up. Take a few minutes to gather all your cleaning supplies and get going. Tackle one room at a time. This works much better than trying to do 10 things at once. It will also give you a great sense of accomplishment to see each clean room. Start at the top and work your way down. Use a broom or a mop with a soft cloth wrapped around it to get any spider webs and dust out of the ceiling corners. Dust the light fixtures. Keep working your way down cleaning counters, windows and windowsills, furniture. Finish by dusting the baseboards and giving the carpets a good vacuuming. Take the time to vacuum under the bed and move furniture to clean the floor under it whenever possible. When you get to the bathrooms, start by spraying some all purpose or bathroom cleaner on all the appliances, especially anything that may have some build up on it, like the soap dish in the shower. Pour some Clorox in the toilet. Allow the cleaner to soak in while you get started on the ceiling, windows and counters. By the time you get around to the sink, shower and toilet, all you need to do is wiping them down and give the inside of the toilet a quick scrub with the brush. Make sure you take some breaks, and drink plenty of water. Cleaning is a touch job. When you are done, enjoy a long shower, put on some clean clothes and put up your feet. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done and get some rest. You deserve it. Adriana Copaceanu is a busy mom of 2. Advice For Finding The Best Fly Fishing Trips

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Ian Botham So you have decided that its time for you to take your very first fly fishing trip. You have been practicing your casting and you have got all your flies ready to land a big fish. What do you need to think about when planning this fly fishing trip? The first thing to decide is where to go. There are many, many excellent places to hone your fly fishing skills at. Some great locations to consider are Washington state, Oregon, Northern California, Texas, and the Great Lakes region. Pick a place that is readily accessible for you and that will not break the bank when it comes time to pay for it. If adventure is your game, look into taking a Canadian fly fishing trip. Most of the best fishing in Canada can be found in remote mountain lakes and streams with lodges only accessible by air or train. Most of the lodges will offer you trained guides to lead you to the fishing spots and transportation is included in the price of your stay. We have even seen one lodge that will give you use of its cabin and you are left on your own in the wilderness. This can be an amazingly liberating adventure! Be sure and find a lodge where everything is included in the cost of your stay. This means transportation to and from the fishing spots, guided tours, along with your rooms. Many places have restaurants in their establishments, but you might want to find a cabin with full kitchen facilities where you can cook your own food when you come back from the river or lake. Fly fishing trips are much more fun when you have a group of people who share your same interests. Its a good idea to join a group who share the interest and try to plan a trip with them. Many organizations plan and launch trips on a regular basis. The friendship and camaraderie you will find can be a wonderful experience. You can also combine your fly fishing with other things while on a trip. Think about where friends and family live. Can you spend a little time fishing and then, in your downtime, do a little visiting? Is there someplace you have always wanted to visit but never really had a reason why? Try taking a fly fishing trip there. There are so many beautiful destinations you can go to when you want to take a trip to do some fly fishing. Pick one, plan well, and then just enjoy. Youll be opening up a whole new world to yourself on a trip like this. And, you might just bring home some prized fish as proof of your prowess. Then you can start planning another trip! Easy Ways for Great Skin- Essential Tips to Keep Skin Healthy

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Ashley Green Beautiful skin is no miracle. Like everything else, if you want it, you have got to work for it. How do you keep your skin looking its best? I’m no skin expert, but having a skin spa as part of the salon and working with the city’s top dermatologists, I have put together these five easy steps to get and keep that healthy glow. 1) Don’t Skip the morning essentials: Would you leave the house naked? Your body wouldn’t react too well. But that’s exactly what you would be doing to your face if you leave home without cleansing, toning, moisturizing and protecting your skin every morning. Complete these steps in order and don’t omit any of them. Each one is only effective if used in tandem with the others. Protection is the most important of all. Don’t leave home without a sun block. It helps slow down the aging process. Now isn’t that a big incentive? 2) Stick to a nightly routine: Haven’t you noticed how awful your skin looks after a bad night? That’s because the skin repairs itself while we sleep. Your body has the time and energy to repair damaged cells when it is resting and not expending energy defending cells from the sun, pollution etc. Also do not forget to cleanse, followed by a moisturizing routine, using a night cream. PROTECTION IS FOREMOST. DON’T GO OUT WITHOUT A SUNBLOCK. 3) Treat your specific problems: Don’t try and cover up your problems because you can cure them. For acne, treatments include glycolic acid cleansers, creams and masks., which help exfoliate whiteheads and blackheads. Long term use of retinol is also known to combat breakouts. The idea is to keep your skin and pores as clean as possible without drying up your skin. For fry, flaky skin use a mild cleanser. Wash your face only when necessary, as water is drying and use a heavier moisturizer. A mild exfoliator once a week is a good idea. For oily skin, choose on oil-free range of products as even acne prone skin needs hydration. Random Tip: Home Remedy for Oily Skin- Take 1/3 cup cocoa, three teaspoons of heavy cream, 1/3 cup ripe papaya, 1/4 cup cup honey and three teaspoons of oatmeal powder. Mix it all together. Apply on your face. After 10 minutes, wash your face with warm water. This is best for oily skin. Must Read: Skin Care in Winters -Tips and Tricks- at http://www.weightloss-health.com/skin_winter.htm 4) Clean up your insides: Your mama was right, you need to eat a nutritionally-balanced diet to provide your skin with the nutrients it requires to look its best. Eat plenty of raw vegetables, drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to hydrate the skin long before its time. 5) Stop the clock: We are all aware that staying out of the sun is a sure-fire way to prevent future damage such as fine lines, loss of elasticity and discoloration. But the question is, can anything undo the damage already done? It is believed that blended antioxidants and vitamins may significantly repair long-term damage. So there is hope. Besides, these four points here should also be of some help. # Avoid tanning salons- they cause sun damage, premature aging and an increased risk of skin cancer. # Visit your dermatologist annually- to detect and treat any abnormalities in your skin such as moles or freckles etc. # Avoid the sun while taking antibiotics- many medications can make you extra sensitive to the sun # And again, don’t forget the sunscreen. Beautiful skin doesn’t just happen. You have to work at it but at the end of the day- You’ re worth it. Must Read: Homemade Spa Treatment, Recipe and Product -Rejuvenate your aging skin with a perfect homemade spa Random Tip: As they say, whenever in doubt wear Black. Likewise, whenever in doubt related to your make-up, apply a basic kaajal pencil, a mascara and a lip-gloss. It would just compliment you so very well. Green Tea for Healing the Body

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Jon Stout Tea has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. But, as much as its been relied on for healing, we are really just beginning to understand all the ways that green tea can protect health and prevent disease. Research has been performed on green teas effects on many different diseases, and the results have been astounding. According to a report by the UK Council on Tea, here is an overview of the diseases which green tea is believed to prevent or treat. High cholesterol Green tea seems to have the ability to lower LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol). Plus, it seems to prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Oxidation causes the LDLs to harden and turn into arterial plaque that clogs our arteries. Green tea has also been shown to inhibit the formation of abnormal blood clots (which are the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes). One study that followed patients who had already had a heart attack showed that those patients who drank green tea recovered from their heart attack more easily and had less chance of suffering a second attack. Green tea may also contribute to lowering blood pressure, which is another contributor to heart disease. Cancer Asian countries have a much lower incidence of cancer than the rest of the world, suggesting that those who are lifelong tea drinkers may be much less at risk for developing cancer than those who dont drink tea. However, new research is showing that drinking tea as part of your cancer treatment may prolong your life. Teas anti-oxidants have been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors so even if youve already been diagnosed with a tumor, you may be able to prevent its growth. In addition, another study showed that women with breast cancer who began consuming 4-5 cups of tea each day lived longer than those breast cancer patients who did not drink tea. Specific cancers that seem to be prevented by green tea include prostate cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, esophageal cancer and cancers of the digestive system. It is even thought to be able to prevent skin cancer when applied topically. Alzheimers Disease Teas anti-oxidants seem to protect brain cells, making them less likely to be affected by the chemicals that affect cells and lead to Alzheimers. In addition, because the number one risk factor for Alzheimers is aging, green teas ability to reduce premature aging could mean that tea drinkers may have bodies that are far younger than their age implies. This would mean that they would be likely to suffer Alzheimers at a much later age, if at all. Parkinsons Disease Parkinsons disease currently affects 1.5 million Americans, and another 60,000 will be diagnosed with the disease this year. Most people who develop Parkinsons do so after the age of 65, but about 15% of patients are under the age of 50. Recently, scientists have discovered a relationship between green tea and the prevention of Parkinsons disease. Green tea seems to have a positive affect on the transport of dopamine in the brain, and this is good news for the prevention of Parkinsons. Dopamine is created in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra. From there, it travels to the part of the brain called the striatum. However, sometimes the transport gets disrupted and some of the dopamine goes back to the substantia nigra instead of making its way to the striatum. This causes the striatum to be dopamine deficient, which is what leads to the tremors and muscle rigidity that comes with Parkinsons. It appears that green teas polyphenols block the backward flow of dopamine so that the transport to the striatum can continue uninterrupted; ensuring that the striatum gets the dopamine it needs to make muscles function smoothly and efficiently. This knowledge may lead to the key to preventing Parkinsons. However, it is important to understand that an altered flow of dopamine is not the only problem in Parkinsons. Cells that produce dopamine in the body actually die off in Parkinsons patients, making them unable to produce enough dopamine. Its unclear whether green tea will have any effect on preventing the death of dopamine producing cells in the brain. Even if green tea is not able to prevent or cure Parkinsons, it may at least be effective in helping to restore some muscle function in those afflicted with the disease, if it can help ensure that the maximum amount of dopamine available travels to the proper portion of the brain. General Aging Green teas anti-oxidants seem to have the ability to keep our bodies young. It has even been shown to restore moisture and elasticity in the skin when applied topically. For this reason, it has begun to show up as an ingredient in beauty products. This ability to keep our bodies from aging as quickly is sure to prove beneficial in helping us live long and healthy lives. So, as you can see, green tea holds much potential in the world of medicine. As research continues, we may find thousands of ways that green tea can prevent and treat diseases. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone in the Job Search

By Marilyn J. Tellez Most everyone these days knows what a comfort zone is. My definition is the place, environment and tasks that we have learned to do and feel comfortable with–a comfort zone. Lots of people feel devastated when they have lost a job as their comfort zone no longer exists. In other words, the time, place, co-workers, tasks which have been performed on the job don’t exist any more. It’s an uncomfortable place to be in. There is no sense of direction. However, if we as workers realize that a comfort zone can disappear at any time, it is important to get out of our comfort zone while working. It does not take lots of money to be adventurous in looking at what other people do. When we establish a reason to find out about other’s jobs, we can understand job roles and skills from someone else’s perspective, thus enhancing our own. It means talking to peolple, volunteering for projects out of our own expertise, and being curious about what other people do. These activities can help us to understand that the comfort zone of the past, may be a prison in disguise. Being more open to various experiences and people can help us to understand that the grass we may covet on the other side of the street, is really just grass; someone else’s comfort zone. See your “zone” as something you can change constantly. That actitivty will keep you on your toes! About The Author Marilyn J.
