Slumming in Los Angeles; Mexican Food for the Poor in Pocket, But Rich in Taste

Friday, December 21st, 2007

By Jeremy Kaplan Part I: Mexican Food: Muy Barato When I moved to Los Angeles in 1992, I had a roommate named Lynn. Lynn was a man who would drink two beers, matriculate to several lines of cocaine, and then culminate the evening with a perilous motorcycle ride across Hollywood to El GRAN BURRITO on Virgil Avenue. There he would order and consume a burrito, taco, and horchata. He never invited me to sit behind him on the motorcycle, and I foolishly neglected to ask. I did ask Lynns friend Celso, the first Hispanic man I met in L.A., where to find the best Mexican restaurant. He frowned and said: What am I, a food critic? Go to El Gran Burrito, knucklehead. I might just as well have asked my inebriated Irish roommate with the feminine name, but it seemed wiser to inquire about Mexican culture from a Mexican person. In any case, I listened to Celso and boarded my roommate’s motorcycle. For $4, I ate the Lynn Special: a burrito carnitas, a carne asada taco, and a large Styrofoam cup of horchata. My five year experiment with vegetarianism was conclusively resolved. My pursuit of great Mexican food in Los Angeles had commenced. El Gran Burrito was discovery #1. The Burrito. The ideal burrito is the al pastor, filled with marinated pork, and complimented by rice, beans, cilantro, and onions. EL TAURINO on Hoover Street serves an al pastor burrito that is “primo” to the Greek gyros and the Armenian shawarma. Like the gyros and shawarma, El Taurinos marinated al pastor is sliced from a crispy chunk of meat on a rotisserie, and then rolled into a big tortilla with the aforementioned ingredients. Like any great burrito, the beans are whole, not refried. The slender pieces of meat crunch and melt as you masticate. The al pastor at EL TAQUITO MEXICANO, located above the 210 freeway in Pasadena, relies less on texture than marinade. The meat is saturated in a dense sauce that resembles the wonderful rendang dish of Indonesia. The flavor is smoky and juicy, with taste and texture augmented by grilled onions. YUCA’S, a tiny hut located in a Los Feliz liquor store parking lot, exemplifies the regional cochinito pibil burrito of the Yucatan region of Mexico. By definition, cochinito pibil is a young, pit roasted pig. While verifying the age of a pig subsequent to pit roasting is regrettably beyond my know-how, Ive many times contemplated the age issue as the tender meat slowly dissolved in my mouth. If young is good, than Yucas cochinito pibil is a puerile beast. Speaking of young meat, I brought my two sons to Yucas after a morning of forced sprints up a Silverlake staircase, and had the honor of watching them shed tears over a burrito. Asada devotees heretofore, the tomato influenced pork juice that dribbled from their possessed lips changed their ways. Now whenever we leave the house for an outing, regardless of where we go, the kids say, Great, we can go get a pibil burrito at Yucas! But were going to Oxnard, I remind them. Isnt that close to Los Feliz? Close enough. The Huarache. In the world of attire, a huarache is a sandal. In the culinary world, it is a flat, crisp, chewy, sandal-shaped slab of masa. At EL HUARACHE AZTECA in Highland Park, a huarache is topped with meat, cilantro, and crumbled bits of white cheese (cotija, me thinks). I usually request al pastor or chicharrones on mine, but all sorts of flesh suffice. Chicharrones, deep fried pork skin with unhealthy doses of fat and meat attached (kind of like a chunky rendition of bacon), are normally sold ala carte in panaderias. On the huarache, the chicharrones are stewed in a spicy red sauce, so that their texture is more reminiscent of tendon. Tendon reminds many people of Jell-o, just chewier. Its an acquired taste; you might opt for pork, beef, or chicken. The white cheese that melts into the meat is rich and somewhat dry, similar to a parmesan or feta. The contrast of crunchy and chewy, juicy and dry, create a sensation deliciously unique in Mexican cuisine. The Tamale. There are almost as many tamale vendors in this metropolis as there are burrito trucks. Some people swear by Lilianas in East L.A., while loyalists in El Sereno love The Tamale Man. Its all good stuff, but I tend to spend my tamale money at East L.A.s LA MASCOTA BAKERY. They make three essential tamales (rojo chile, verde chile, and queso), and one that I just dont get (dulce), so I just dont get it. The rojo is filled with pork in a red salsa, and the verde is chicken in a green salsa. The contents are crucial to the superiority of one tamale over another. The rojo at La Mascota consists of several tender pork chunks that one dreams about finding in a carnitas burrito. The cheese in the queso tamale is soft, rich, and permeated with green chile. I wouldnt be able to prove it in a culinary court, but Im pretty damn sure it is panela cheese. The masa that encases the contents is dense and flaky; it feels light, yet it firmly holds its load (mmm!) without crumbling apart. The Gordita. What cant you do with masa, the Mexican wonder dough? At ANA MARIA’S, a food stall at Grand Central Market, they mold the masa into flat, grilled cakes that they split and stuff with so much stuff, its like eating a taxi cab with an endless supply of clowns but even tastier! This is a gordita. Its basically meat, beans, cilantro, salsa, and a crema that tastes like the tzatziki with which the Greeks douse their gyros. The best meat here is the carnitas, which are oily, stringy, and plentiful, like a pulled pork sandwich. Between the meat, beans, and fried masa, a $2.50 gordita can assuage and punish an empty stomach for hours. Being as dense as a gordita myself, I often order two. The Hot Seafood. There are many consistently solid mariscos restaurants in Los Angeles serving variations of fried and grilled fish, and Ive yet to decide upon one as being transcendent. SENOR FISH has a very nice scallop burrito, and seafood quesadillas that are remarkably excessive. Senor is not as good as its reputation, nor as inexpensive as it used to be, but its still a damn good meal. VIA MAR, in Highland Park, is an inexpensive, ordinary mariscos stand that serves one extraordinary item. Their langostino burrito is filled with buttery, sauted crawfish, green peppers, and rice. The langostino meat is the nearest thing to the taste of lobster. The succulent pieces detonate in buttery bursts of indulgent gratification. For value and consistency, the SIETE MARES chain of mariscos restaurants may very well be the best in Los Angeles. Most branches consist of a taco stand and a sit down restaurant. Go to the taco stand for fish and shrimp tacos, burritos, and ceviche tostadas. The restaurant is a good place to sweat over a big bowl of siete mares soup, or a plate of fried or grilled fish with rice and beans. The Cold Seafood. Rays is the legendary pizza joint in New York City that was voted Best Pizza a few decades ago. Soon afterward, dozens of Rays Pizzas popped up throughout Manhattan, leaving the neophyte unsure as to the location of the original Rays (Original Rays also being a frequently repeated pizzeria name). I think the original is on 11th Street & 6th Avenue, but I cant prove it. Its kind of like the Tommys & Tomys scenario in Los Angeles, or the Mexican seafood trucks that line Figueroa Boulevard alongside Sycamore Grove Park in Highland Park. Only one of them is legendary, but luckily each truck has a different name. You want the one labeled LA MAR AZUL. La Mar Azul serves seafood cocktails (cocteles de mariscos) and several variations of ceviche on tostadas. The cocteles are fresh, inexpensive, and generous of portion. The ceviche (raw, citrus marinated seafood) tostadas are sublime. You can order abalone, pulpo (octopus), camarones (shrimp), jaiba (imitation crab), or mixta (combination of all the above). The meat is heaped upon a bed of rich creamy, cilantro laden sauce (sour cream? mayo?) that combined with the cool seafood is ineffably tasty. The crisp, salty, foundation of the tostada effectively supports the substance. One tostada will bring your belly to a standing ovation, and two will close the show at a tab of no more than $5.00. Your tummy will reminisce for days to come, but without the painful reminders of a gluttonous love affair such as experienced over the gordita. This is a healthy relationship. The Taco. What do you want with a taco? Get a burrito, silly. Its bigger, and its got beans. If the burrito doesnt quite fill your tank, or youre an anti-beanist, then purchase a taco for supplemental succor. Any of the aforementioned burrito joints can make a tasty and efficient taco. REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST Soon after I discovered El Gran Burrito, it moved west to Santa Monica Boulevard and Vermont. I followed. They expanded the dining room and added additional rooms, but the place still looks the same. Its progressive growth from small dump to big dump brings to mind the modifications in Steve Martins childhood home in “The Jerk”. Success changed the size of El Gran, but it didnt alter the substance. Its still an inexpensive dump serving great food to patrons wondering in off the street. It wasnt until a year or two ago that they finally raised the prices of their burritos (from $2.50 to 3.00 or 3.50), which are still gran in quality and quantity. Much like my children cry over Yucas pibil, I still blubber over my El Gran carnitas burrito. Let it be known that I, being of satiated body and mind, request they cater my funeral. Wah! A Tribute to the Inventor of Ringtones

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Philip_Nicosia]Philip Nicosia Remember the ancient times, when your cell phone had just two ring options: a shrill, electronic trill, or a scratchy melody (something incredibly dull, like Fur Elise) that came with the unit? Those miserable days are over, thanks to the innovations introduced by a Finnish computer programmer named Vesa-Matti Paananen. When Nokia, the company he worked for, started experimenting with a nifty function called smart messaging, he was hit with a brilliant idea. If people could send text messages to each other, this same software could be used to deliver other types of information, such as the codes of songs. Paananen went straight to work, and came up with a program he dubbed Harmonium. Harmonium was rough by todays standards, but it set the foundation for the multi billion ringtone industry. It let people program musical sequences into their phones which they could forward to their friends. Users were no longer confined to the songs that were packaged into the units. The invention couldve made him a billionaire, but Paananen also generously made Harmonium a freeware, ready to download from the Internet for free. Everyone could use itand because of this, everyone did, and the phone ringtones started to proliferate. Some phone ringtones were made by private individuals who just liked tinkering with the program or wanted to proudly share their creations with the rest of the world. Others collected these ringtones into one site (the pioneers of the multitude of ringtone providers you can now find on the web). Still others were companies that took Harmoniums basic structure and put their engineers to work at developing it. They saw the potential in the software but wanted a richer, more realistic musical quality. These companies were responsible for the leaps and jumps in ringtone technology. From the monophonic ringtones in Harmonium, they developed polyphonic ringtones, which synthesized various notes similar to those found in music boxes. The latest development is the true tone. These true tones are completely indistinguishable from the songs played on the radio, for the simple reason that they are actually recorded in a studio. Think of them as mini-music, a highly compressed excerpt from a full-length song. Of course, these developments would not have been made possible without the improvements in the phone itself. The first units were large, clunky handsets with very little memory capacity. Songs were scratchy simply because there was very little room for complicated programs. (In fact, the first units could only hold a maximum of five or six ringtones.) Todays phones are actually more powerful than the first computers. They can not only hold vast amounts of informationvideo footage, large photo files, and a hundred ringtones)users can extend this capacity with a portable memory chip. People have also become more tech-savvy in the last 15 years. It is not uncommon for teenagers to tinker with software that wouldve intimidated adults at the start of the computer age (this was the time when most people had grown up using typewriters). Many ringtone sites allow users to contribute their own creations, and these musicians are neither Nokia engineers nor computer geeks. They are regular people who have found a way to make music and deliver it to a worldwide audience, sans recording contract. To think this all started with a big idea by a brilliant engineer with a big heart. Thank you, Vesa-Matti Paananen. Easy Gardening - Parsley Varieties

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

By D. Perse Parsley is one of the most well known herbs and also one of the easiest to use. It tastes fresh and its flavor goes with almost any food except deserts. You can sprinkle it on your eggs or add it to almost any other dish on your menu. You can use it fresh or dry, year-round. It also beautifully embellishes your dinner plate sprinkled chopped on top of the food or as side decoration. We know and grow three parsley varieties: Curly parsley or curly leaf parsleyItalian parsley or flat leaf parsleyHamburg parsley Curly parsley is bright green, its leaves more or less tightly curled and coarser than the leaves of Italian parsley. It is restaurant chefs favorite for garnishing. Curly leaf parsleys growth is compact, usually not very vigorous, the stems are quite short and it therefore makes and excellent edging in flower beds. Its color is a perfect match to hot pink, bright orange, red and yellow blooms. Italian parsley grows usually taller, more vigorous and has more taste than the curly kind. Flat leaf parsley is glossy green, its leaves softer (and easier to chew on while eaten fresh), on longer stems. It shouldnt miss in anyones garden. Flat-leaved parsley fits in your flower bed as well and works great for filling blank spots in your perennial border. Hamburg parsley is more often used and grown in Europe. On top of flat, great tasting leaves, its parsnip-like root is also edible. The root can be used fresh (sliced or grated in your salad) or cooked in any soup or stew. Hamburg parsleys root has a distinctive, peppery taste. Which parsley variety to choose is completely up to you and what you want to use this great herb for. All three are rich in vitamins A and C. They all grow in sun to partial shade, in well drained soil. While you can easily find flat and curly leaf seedlings in any nursery, its very unlikely to find the Hamburg parsley so youll have to grow this gem from seeds. Is Adult ADD Causing Your Relationship To Suffer?

Monday, December 17th, 2007

By Jennifer Koretsky Recently there has been some interesting news and research about adult Attention Deficit Disorder and the increased stress that it causes in romantic relationships. If you or your partner have ADD, then you know how very true that is! Relationships require hard work to begin with, and when you add adult ADD to the mix things only become more complicated. Here are a few tips that you can use in your relationship to help keep your ADD from causing excess stress and problems. We use these strategies in my house, so my non-ADD partner and I have tested and approved each of these tips! Power Hours Help Create Balance Rather than stressing about all the household chores, try using “power hours.” When the house is a mess and its driving you nuts, set a timer for an hour, split up, and do as much cleaning and organizing as you can. On the weekend, when there is more to be done and more time to do it, set the timer for a couple of hours. Once the time is up, relax! Don’t be tempted to keep going. Pat yourselves on the back for accomplishing what you did and then enjoy some down time together. Use the AIS Rule There was an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond in which Ray became frustrated with Deborah’s chronic lateness. He declared an AIS (A– in Seat) time; if youre a– is not sitting in the car by this time, I’m leaving without you! I don’t advocate leaving without your partner, but I do think that AIS times are very helpful for adults with ADD. If you and your partner have a dinner date, then your AIS time is the absolute latest time that your butt needs to be in the car in order to get to the restaurant on time for your reservation. You can then work backwards from the AIS time to determine how much time you need to get ready, and what you may or may not have time to do before you leave. It’s best to let the non-ADD partner (if there is one) set the AIS! Take Care of Yourself Your ADD (and thus your impulsivity, irritability, disorganization, etc.) becomes more challenging when your stress levels are high. When your stress levels are high, your ADD is worse, your partner becomes more annoyed, and your relationship suffers. Recognize the fact that when you put yourself first, get your own needs met, and allow yourself time to relax, your relationship benefits. This applies to both ADD and non-ADD partners. Relationships, like individuals, are always a work in progress. Small, positive steps can have tremendously positive effects. Real Estate Marketing Strategies: Tips for Creating Success

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Maya Bailey, Ph.D. Take a moment to think about the word marketing. What thoughts come up for you? Do you wish it would go away? Do you start to think of yourself like a salesperson? Do you have self-limiting beliefs, like I cant market myself? What feelings come up for you, do you get tense, do you get a knot in your stomach, or do your jaws clench? Old beliefs about marketing: Most people think of marketing as aversive and painful. They Make comments like, Why cant I just do my work and have the clients come to me? I hate marketing. This is because most people have old beliefs about marketing. Some of these are: Marketing is phony Marketing is begging Marketing is pushy Marketing is drudgery New beliefs about marketing Since our beliefs create our reality, It makes sense for us to reprogram any beliefs that would interfere with our success.Heres some way to think of marketing that will actually make you feel passionate about marketing. Marketing is an authentic expression of who you are. If you are doing what you love, then expressing what you do with others is authentic Marketing is actually the opposite of begging. Its a gift. If you give a presentation to a group, write an article or take a prospect to lunch, you are giving. Effective marketing is not base on being pushy. It is based on the Law of Attraction. Imagine yourself as a magnet, drawing appreciative clients for your services. Marketing is not drudgery. In fact, it is a great way to meet new people, an adventure into new friendships, and connections. 5 Insider Beauty Secrets Other Women Don’t Want You To Know! (Part 1)

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Beth Scott Imagine what you would do if you knew miracle workingbeauty secrets. And if you had the self confidence that comeswith being beautiful. Now before you laugh and say you’ll never be beautiful, listenup. I know where you’re coming from! At one time I didn’t know any beauty secrets. Before I learned any beauty secrets I was plain, even bordering on ugly. I had acne, chapped lips, weight issues, wardrobe disasters, and not so white teeth. But thats all become past with the 5 beauty secrets that have changed my life. I pulled through all my beauty disasters and learned some valuable beauty secrets as a result. Now people are always commenting to me on my beauty. Saying I shouldbe a model, etc…. And guys are no longer even an issue! I don’thave to look for them, they come to me. It turns out the best beauty secrets are those that are won bypersonal knowledge and experience. Not just by reading general tipsin magazines. So by experimentation over the years and by perseverance, I’ve foundout what really works and what doesn’t. Beauty Secret 1 Unchap/beautify your lips with this trick. For soft, beautifully kissable lips, you need thefollowing: a washcloth (I’m not kidding either), warm water, and yourfavorite brand of lip balm. First you apply a coat of lip balm. Then wet one corner of thewashcloth, put the warm wet corner of the washcloth between yourlips, press them together and hold for 5 seconds. Then gently massage any remaining lip balm from lips with the wetcorner of washcloth, and dry lips with a corner thats dry. Apply lip balm again to keep your lips chap free. You may also applylipstick or lip gloss on over the layer of lip balm. I learned this was the best way to keep lips from chapping, aftergoing through too many winters with dried, and chapped lips. Beauty Secret 2 Clear your acne, and get beautiful skin. For clear glowing skin, a little home remedy does wonders for mycomplexion, as it should with yours too. Steam your face for 20 minutes every night after washing it, thenevery other night after steaming your face, massage a half teaspooncastor oil over face. Leave it on at night while you sleep and wash off immediatelyupon waking. Steam face for twenty more minutes in the morning afterwashing. When you finish steaming your face splash your face withcool water and dry it. If your skin starts to show any signs of a pimple forming. Take onenight off from steaming and applying castor oil and apply BenzoylPeroxide over face. Take the next night off also from the steaming, castor oil, andbenzoyl peroxide. Continue facial regimen with steaming and castoroil the following night. This beauty secret will moisturize your face at the same time it willhelp clear up acne and pimples. But only if you work at itconsistently. Beauty Secret 3 Good taste in clothes. When shopping for clothes try to stay away from really bigprints, or weird mixes of colors (eg. green, pink and blue flowerscombined on a white background, for instance). Clothes like these just scream “I’m color blind!” And if youin fact, actually are color blind, always shop with a friend whoisn’t and has good taste in clothes. Buy basic colors. Solid reds, pinks, blues, whites, and blacks. Orthings with small tasteful prints and designs. Then mix and match each basic color with a corresponding one (bluegoes well with white, pink, and sometimes with red, and differentshades of the same color almost always go well together). Put these beauty secrets to use, and start seeing the benefits today.Be sure to read Part 2 of this article, which contains thelast 2 beauty secrets. In Part 2 I’ll teach you the beauty secrets for whitening yoursmile without draining your bank account. And how to use clothes toyour advantage by hiding figure flaws and defects. Eucalyptus Honey

Friday, December 14th, 2007

By Ruth Tan Amongst the array of honey products, have you tried Eucalyptus honey before? Besides its very distinct taste and odor, what makes it so special is its host of health benefits. Eucalyptus is one of the plants that is commonly applied together with honey as a home remedy due to its medicinal healing properties of the compound eucalyptol present in it. Eucalyptus essential oil obtained from fresh leaves of the tall evergreen eucalyptus tree has and is used in a variety of over the counter drugs including rubs, inhalers, liniments, rash creams, and mouthwashes. The eucalyptus tree, also known as fever tree, blue gum tree or stringy bark tree, has the botanical name Eucalyptus Globulus. It is native to Australia but was introduced to other parts of the world including India, Europe and South Africa a few centuries ago. Though many countries do produce eucalyptus oil, Australia is still the worlds prime supplier of eucalyptus oil. The health benefits of the colorless eucalyptus oil which is extracted from the fresh eucalyptus leaves, branch tips, and dried leaves, remind me of honey properties — anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant, deodorant, antiseptic, antibacterial, and stimulating. In fact I first started reading up Eucalyptus honey when a salesman tried to sell his bottles of Eucalyptus honey at a fleamarket and taught me how to use it as an expectorant for mild coughs and colds. Eucalyptus essential oil is typically a volatile oil and its primary active constituent euclyptols numerous health benefits have attracted the world to explore its usage as a conventional medicine as well as an aromatherapy oil. You probably also noticed that eucalyptus oil in aromatherapy is becoming increasingly popular as it blends so perfectly well with many other essential oils including thyme essential oil, rosemary essential oil, marjoram essential oil, lavender essential oil, cedarwood essential oil, and frankincense essential oil. As an ingredient in over-the-counter drugs, Eucalyptus oil is sold and promoted over-the-counter for it is used for temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and for temporary relief of nasal congestion and coughs associated with a cold. Eucalyptus oil has been compared to menthol because it acts on receptors in the nasal mucosa, which help to alleviate nasal congestion. For eucalyptus to provide an effective expectorant and antiseptic action, the volatile oil has to contain at least 70% eucalyptol. It has been reported that one of the first medicinal uses of Eucalyptus was by the Australian aborigines, who not only extracted valuable water from its roots, but used its leaves to relieve fevers. Besides being a good remedy for respiratory problems, Eucalyptus honey is a good antiseptic owing to its germicidal properties. On its exposure to air, ozone is formed which is a well-known antiseptic. Hence Eucalyptus honey is used for healing wounds, ulcers, burns, cuts, abrasions and sores. It is also effective on insect bites and stings. It is often recommended to patients suffering from rheumatism, lumbago, sprained ligaments and tendons, stiff muscles, aches, fibrosis and even nerve pain. The analgesic and anti inflammatory Eucalyptus honey is massaged on the skin surface in circular motion to help relieve muscle and joint pains. Another important reason why people add eucalyptus oil to baths, spas and saunas is that it provides a cooling and refreshing effect. Eucalyptus oil stimulates and is effective in removing exhaustion and mental sluggishness and rejuvenates those who are suffering from stress and mental disorders. Eucalyptus essential oil has applications in skin care products, soaps, detergents and household cleaners, is well often applied topically to treat skin infections, and is used as a prime ingredient in many mouthwashes and toothpastes as it is very effective against cavities, dental plaques, gingivitis and other dental infections due to its germicidal and antiseptic properties. The antiseptic and deodorant nature of eucalyptus oil makes it a perfect room freshener for hospitals and sickbed atmosphere. It also kills bacteria and germs in the air and hence keeps the room environment clean. However, one should take care while using eucalyptus oil. If taken in large quantities, eucalyptus oil is toxic. Life-threatening poisonings have been reported from overdoses of eucalyptus oil. Symptoms of overdose or toxicity include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, central nervous system depression, a drop in blood pressure, circulation problems, collapse, and coma. Only a few drops of Eucalyptus oil are enough to cause life-threatening poisoning in some children. Eucalyptus supplementation is not advisable for children, older or chronically ill people, pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding. Insulin-dependent diabetics should carefully monitor blood sugar since eucalyptus may affect blood sugar levels. Eucalyptus may affect the metabolism and clearance of drugs, hence anyone under medication treatment should avoid the use of eucalyptus. How To Evaluate A Website Or Company

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By Phil Covington The word Website appears first in the title of this article because, especially in the home based business and network marketing industries, you will often be dealing with an individual Webpage or Website as opposed to a large company. That Website might be the independent representative page of a representative, or it could be an independently developed page operated by an entrepreneur. Even if you are looking at a Webpage that is owned by a company, often you will have to go no further in the evaluation process to rule out a particular Website or opportunity. Then, only if the Website passes your tests, do you go on to evaluate the company and opportunity. Please realize, also, that this article does not really address the issues involved in evaluating the opportunity side of a company, or fully evaluating the company and opportunity combined. On the Homepage of ABCIncome.com appears a 13-point criteria developed out of two decades of experience with evaluating business opportunities. The version on the Homepage is only an overview, but a more complete version of what to look for will appear soon in the form of a new article. One other point before we really get started, is that this article is not concerned with aesthetic issues. Granted, there are certain, generally accepted Web design practices, some of which will be talked about here. However, just because a Website uses a certain type of graphics, or perhaps a wild color scheme (or a boring one), doesnt mean that it cant offer good content or opportunities. There are just too many factors having to do with personal preference for these to be considered a major factor for the purpose of this article. Ok, with that said, here are some of the things that you should be looking for when evaluating a Website or a company: 1. Is the MAIN Website directly accessible via a URL (Web address) that reasonably makes sense? Some Websites, most notably those that are questionable, will occasionally set up even their main URL so that it isnt very intuitive or accessible for the general public. For instance, normally a Website name might look something like this: www.evaluateawebsite.com Or www.evaluateawebsite.com/index.htm Or www.evaluateawebsite.com/main.asp On the other hand, if something isnt quite right it might look something like this: www.evaluateawebsite.com/prelaunch/ Or www.evaluateawebsite.com/comingsoon/ Or www.evaluateawebsite.com/invitationonly/ Let me immediately point out that simply because a URL ends with a name similar to one of the examples above that doesnt mean that the Website isnt legitimate. If, for instance, you are reading this article directly on the Website of ABCIncome.com instead of in my email newsletter, then it ends with a name that is tacked onto the main Web address of ABCIncome.com. Its pretty standard practice in the industry to add forward slashes and additional directories, folders, and/or page names to the right of the main URL. However, IF you cannot erase those extra characters to the right and directly access the Website with just the portion that ends in .com, or .net, or .biz, or .ws, etc., that may be cause for concern. Many Websites direct visitors to pages that arent the main Homepage. However, if you cant get to the Websites main Homepage, again, that may be cause for suspicion. Business Websites are all about marketing a product or service, so any normal Website owner would typically want to make sure that their Homepage is accessible to any and all visitors. 2. What kind of contact options are provided? Email, Contact Form, telephone number, etc.? If there are no contact options, unless there is a VERY good reason, such as that the site is undergoing construction or maintenance, consider it to be a big RED Flag! If the site offers a way for you to purchase something, but there are no contact options (until after purchase, you hope), then absolutely consider it a BIG RED Flag! In general, the more contact options, the better. I would feel the most comfortable, for instance, dealing with Website where an email address or contact form, and a phone number, and a street address are provided. I would feel least comfortable with a Website where only an email address and nothing else is provided. Remember also that you can, or should, view Websites owned by individuals slightly differently than Websites owned by a company. Any legitimate, reputable company, for instance, should offer at least some contact information, again, the more the better. However, it is not uncommon for Websites owned and managed by individuals to feature less contact information. Especially if it is owned by a home based business person; he or she might not be comfortable publishing their home street address or phone number on the Web, for instance. In rare cases with certain types of replicating Websites (where many representatives have the same type of Website) the user may not have the option of providing more contact details. But, again, thats rare. These days even most Websites aimed at individual users allow the user to add and update their contact information. Even a P.O. Box is better than no address at all. Here again, whether dealing with a giant company or an individual, it is not uncommon for companies or individuals to use P.O. Boxes to more efficiently handle their mail. True, some unscrupulous operators hide behind P.O. Boxes. However, they are a much smaller percentage in comparison to legitimate users. The main reason is that, especially after 9/11, in order to apply for and use a P.O. Box or address service the applicant has to provide various kinds of information, including a real street address, and proof of identity, etc. Some Websites provide only an instant chat username as a means of contact. Here also, usually to be considered a red flag. Because scam artists know that providing a means of contact considerably increases the credibility of a Website, one of the cleverest tactics to watch out for is a site that provides a Live Chat or Live Support or Live Customer Service option, etc., but it is never really staffed! The above tactic is often combined with the additional tactic of the site claiming to be located in a part of the World that just happens not to be open for business during regular business hours in busy parts of the World such as the USA and Canada. I saw that tactic employed by a scam Website claiming to be located in the UK. It offered, Live Support, but noted that they operated according to UK time, which, conveniently, meant that by the time that most people in the USA and Canada got out of work and visited their Website, it was too late to make contact due to it being after hours in the UK. In reality, the sites Live Support option was never staffed, but most visitors never caught on due to the cleverness of the scheme. 3. After checking the items above I usually look for an About Page. Here again a Website run by an individual might not have one. However, the best companies, whether large or small, will almost always have at least one page if not more devoted to information about the company. Sometimes information about the companys management is provided as well. These pages also go by names such as, Company info., Our Company, or just, Company, etc. The About page can often tell you a lot about a company, including how long they claim to have been in business. In general, the longer the better! 4. Does the Website feature any certifications, affiliations, or rankings, backed by reputable and unbiased 3rd party organizations such as The Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Dun & Bradstreet, TRUSTe, Alexa, DSA (Direct Selling Association), etc.? Though none of the above organizations endorse or guarantee companies, membership in and/or certification by a respected 3rd party organization can go a long way toward giving you greater peace of mind that a company or individual is legitimate and trustworthy. Something that people dont commonly know about the Better Business Bureau is that they can establish a file and keep records on ANY company or individual whether they are a member or not. The difference is, however, that a company who is not a member has not agreed to the terms of the Better Business Bureau, cannot display their logos, and has no way to really showcase a good record if they have one. However, even if a company is not listed with the BBB, IF theyve been around for a while and you can verify that fact, at least the BBB may have on file any negative complaints that have been filed. I must stress, however, this really applies only if the company that you are doing business with has been around for a considerable length of time, and you can verify it. Thats because a common tactic of scam artists is to start a new company, take peoples money, and then simply close their doors, start another new company, and repeat the process all over again. Thus, if they are not a BBB member, they may very well have taken advantage of many unsuspecting victims, but simply havent been around long enough for complaints to have reached the BBB yet. Thats why it is a requirement that when a business or individual applies for membership they must have been in business for at least 6 months to a year, and, further, the BBB goes as far back as 3 years in their files to see if there have been any past complaints before granting membership. Unscrupulous companies that try to evade detection by closing their doors and then opening up again under a new name are often detected in the BBBs database. So, if you know that a company previously operated under a different name it would be a good idea to check to see if any complaints were filed against the company under its previous name(s). 5. WHOIS and Alexa are tools that you can use in combination to further develop a profile and picture of what a Website is all about. Alexa ( http://www.alexa.com/ ) allows you to track various data about a Websites activity, perhaps how long the site has been around, and maybe who owns it. Alexa can be a great tool, but you have to be very careful if you arent familiar with what all of the various pieces of information mean. For instance, just because a Website has a high Alexa rating doesnt mean its credible. There are enough people who love money enough to jump onboard any scheme or scam even if it seems too good to be true that unscrupulous Websites have often been able to achieve high Alexa ratings. The thing to watch for is most of the traffic being generated by the people who are jumping onboard the scheme and advertising the site, as opposed to the Website climbing up in the rankings on its own merits. Again, it may take you a while before you are able to interpret and read the data to be able to discern such things. However, one potential clue that might be a tip off is when you see a Website appear out of the blue and all of a sudden it has a high Alexa rating. Maybe its ranked at #77,000, for instance, but its only been on the charts for a few weeks or months. Not always, but, especially if you are utilizing the other methods discussed here, you may be able to determine that such a brief and rapid change in ranking is a red flag for that particular Website. You also have to realize that Websites and the companies and individuals behind them are separate entities. For instance, Sears Roebuck had obviously already been around a long, long time before they ever had a Website. And even companies or individuals that have a Website sometimes add new ones, etc. So, if a company or individual says theyve been around for a while, but their Website hasnt been around as long, that isnt necessarily a red flag as long as you can verify the information. As for WHOIS, there are numerous WHOIS servers that you can use. Many in fact. However, three of the best known and most popular are: InterNIC http://www.internic.net/ VeriSign http://registrar.verisign-grs.com/whois/ and Network Solutions http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/whois/ WHOIS is a special database that lets you find out about a Website by typing in the domain name (the Website address). Among the things that you may be able to find out are out how long the Website has been around, who owns it, and where that company or individual is actually located. Earlier I mentioned a scam Website that claimed to be in the UK. Well, using the same kinds of methods that Im telling you about here I quickly found all kinds of red flags. One of the biggest was that when I ran a WHOIS query the result came back that the site owners were not really in the UK as they claimed to be, but were actually registered on the offshore island of Belize, a common tactic of, and a HUGE red flag characteristic of scam operations. Another thing to watch for are private registrations by companies or individuals who are obviously advertising as doing business with the public. Private registrations are those where the real identity of the Websites owner is not revealed. Thats fine if someone just wants privacy. However, companies doing business with the public are by their very nature doing business with the public! Therefore, it really makes no sense, in most cases, for someone to file a private registration. It can be a red flag that makes one wonder, who really owns this Website, and why dont they show themselves? 6. Dun & Bradstreet and similar business intelligence and credit reporting agencies, most notably Hoovers, are also excellent options if you really want to find out more about a company. From Microsoft to Motorola, Dun & Bradstreet (also known as D&B) is THE industrys most respected credit reporting and business intelligence source for that kind of information. Unlike most of the other resources mentioned in this article, D&B primarily focuses on large companies like the Fortune 500, or larger small businesses. So, many, if not most individuals and small businesses will not be listed. Additionally, these services require a fee, which can be substantial in order for you to pull a report on a company, unless you have a subscription, which also involves a fair amount of cost. You can, however, run limited queries at no cost that may be helpful to you. 7. One last point to consider is one that most people never give much thought to when evaluating a Website or a company, and that is the payment methods they accept. Limited payment method acceptance (the inability to accept online payment) may be a red flag when dealing with all but the smallest companies or individuals. The bottom line is that the more payment methods a site is able to offer the greater the convenience for the customer, which equates to more sales. Therefore, no established company would want to be without the ability to accept multiple forms of payment, unless, of course, something is wrong. This article is already lengthy, and space simply does not permit going into detail about the different types of payment processors. However, in general, a Website that accepts payment via a secure merchant shopping cart of its own has probably passed the most rigorous application, credit check, and background verification process. With a third party processor, such as 2Checkout, ClickBank, or PayPal, this is less so, but still applicable. If a company or individual cant qualify for an account with one of the above processors that can often be a red flag and a sign of either credit and/or financial problems, or even fraudulent activity. If a company has had problems that could explain why they cant accept common forms of payment. An online Website saying that it can only accept payment in the form of a money order, cashiers check, etc., should probably be viewed with suspicion. Also, if a Website features StormPay as the only payment option, and not also PayPal, that too can be a red flag. Thats because StormPay has much less stringent application and maintenance requirements than PayPal. So, a Website who HAD an account with one of the most respected payment processing company accounts like those described above, but then got into trouble and had their account banned or terminated, may still be able to get a StormPay account. Certainly not all StormPay accounts fall into this category, but, again, if its the only payment method accepted, it may be cause for concern. Likewise, a Website offering as its only means of conducting transactions the e-gold service, may also be cause for concern and even a red flag. e-gold is an alternative service that allows companies and people to use gold instead of dollars as a means of conducting transactions. Though e-gold is a legitimate service that continues to grow and is accepted by many reputable merchants, it is often used by scam artists for obvious reasons. Bad Credit Secured Loans Minimizes Your Reliability As A Borrower

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Philip_Mould]Philip Mould If a bad credit record minimises your reliability as a borrower, then offering collateral increases it. It is true that a bad credit record makes you vulnerable as a borrower. Some lenders may not be ready to entertain your loan application. But if you offer collateral and apply for a bad credit secured loan, then you will have all the chance of getting approval for the loan. When a loan is taken against collateral it lessens the risk of the lender to a greater extent. He has the security to recover his money even if the borrower fails to pay off. Same is the case with a bad credit secured loan. The collateral offered by you diminishes the risk of the lender. So he takes your bad credit history lightly and gets ready to offer the loan. Easy availability is not the only benefit of a bad credit secured loan. There are some other highly useful benefits of this loan like low interest rate, big loan amount, small repayment installment, and long repayment period etc. In addition to that there will be the freedom to use the loan for a number of purposes. However, a bad credit secured loan is not totally devoid of demerits. This loan puts your collateral at high risk. In the event of your failure the collateral may be repossessed by the lender. That is why it is necessary to search out a loan with suitable terms and conditions so that you can manage it easily and avoid property repossession. Loans for Self-Employed

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joseph_Kenny]Joseph Kenny One of the most fundamental details that all banks will look for in all loan applicants is a steady, dependable income. The amount of this income will decide how much the applicant will be granted. If there were no dependable income, then on the face of it, it would appear to a lenders calculation, that the loan amount should be zero. This is the traditional method of calculating personal loans. Self Employed Business Loans Business loans are calculated on a different basis. They do not need to show guaranteed income. In fact to do so would be impossible for most business. So banks came up with an alternative way of calculating business credit worthiness. This involved assessing past earnings, assets, debt and liabilities. A similar model is now in place for self-employed loan applicants. Instead of showing them evidence of your salary, you can instead show the bank what business youre in, how much youve been earning and for how long, how the business is likely to continue and current debts and liabilities. All of this information will then go into assessing your income, your risk, and how much you can afford to borrow. Difficulties Being Self Employed There are still some difficulties involved in borrowing for the unemployed. For example, if you havent been in business for very long, it will again become difficult for lenders to assess your level of risk. Usually they can get a pretty accurate picture of what your earnings are going to be by looking at the amounts of previous years. If the income has been steadily increasing or decreasing, they may wish to take this trend into account but basically, they will be assuming that you continue on as you have been trading thus far. This becomes impossible if your business is very new. There will be no trading record or past earnings to rely on. Another difficulty that you will face is that many lenders may still treat the self-employed as a greater risk than traditionally employed. It is a simple fact that new business fail more often than more established businesses. They also fail more often then lay-offs occur. So the risk may still be treated as greater and this will be indicated in the terms and interest rates you receive. The Future All this seems to be changing as employed people switch from job to job more frequently than before. This makes them less reliable, and the self employed are gaining a reputation as good borrowers, the rates you receive should begin to get closer and closer to those of salaried applicants.
