Reviving Romance

By Linnea Sheldon Any long-term relationship can get to a point where it may feel as if romance is dead. There are many reasons that this may happen, and it is very rare that a relationship doesnt go through a dry spell. In order to avoid the death of romance in your own relationship you must take active steps to keep the flames burning. One-sided romance doesnt work either, so you need to make sure your partner is in this with you. Romance tends to die when a couple gets too comfortable with each other. Being able to share and be comfortable around each other is very important, but he also doesnt need to see you waxing your upper lip or shaving your underarms. One-way to combat this is to primp for each other every once in a while. Maybe plan a night out or a nice sit down meal a couple times a month, or more if possible. Dont get ready together; surprise him after you have your favorite dress and best shoes on. It will be a lot more of a treat for his eyes if he didnt spend the last hour watching you play with your hair and paint on your makeup. Another important way to keep the romance alive is to spend time apart. You will be much more interesting if you have a life outside of your relationship, not to mention you will be happier and healthier. Spending time apart will make your time together that much more special. Long days at work can also make it hard to take the time and put the effort into your relationship. After working all day you are more likely to want to sit on the couch with your feet up than spend quality time together. Add kids to the equation and it becomes even harder. Rather than vegging out in front of the TV try trading massages or take a nice relaxing bath together after you put the kids to bed. Romantic gestures like flowers and dinners out can get expensive, especially after the early courting period when you are spending more time together and dont have to work so hard to impress. Affordable indulgences can be just as much of a treat as the more expensive ones. Share coffee and conversation Saturday morning at your favorite coffee shop. Pack a picnic and sneak away for lunch, grab your favorite dessert and share it with each other as an after dinner treat. There are many ways to keep the romance alive. There are simple little things like putting a note in his briefcase to spending more than a second on your good-bye kiss. For other ideas there are many books available for all different topics. If your dates are getting routine, find somewhere new to explore like a museum or hiking trail. If your sex life has become routine research some new positions or try a new toy. Basically what it comes down to is putting in the effort even if you have to schedule it in. Make your relationship a priority and it will give back for years to come.
